Abbreviated Portrait No. Three: LVS.
Poteet on Elvis: Marilyn was easy for me, but the next subject, Elvis Presley, was a dilemma. Initially, I wanted to collage the painting with
parts of his past that I saw, but every attempt was a disaster-it just wasn't HIM. It took time to see within myself what I had always seen but
never realized.
Elvis was 1957, black hair, black leather and pink cadillacs. I saw him in black and pink somehow diagonally placed together.
Once I recognized that this was the true memory, the rest fell into place.
Note of interest: While painting LVS, Poteet was not aware that pink was Presley's favorite color. Elvis often shopped in Harlem, the only place he could purchase pink shoes and shirts. He lined his suits with pink, and gave pink cadillacs as gifts.
